Am 11. November 1918 endete der Erste Weltkrieg, der zehn Millionen Soldaten und neun Millionen Zivilisten das Leben gekostet hat. Wie konnte es zu dieser Katastrophe kommen, an deren Ende ganze Königreiche nicht mehr existierten? Am 28. Juni 1914 war der österreichische Thronfolger von einem bosnischen Nationalisten erschossen worden. Kurz darauf erklärte Österreich-Ungarn Serbien den Krieg.
