Expedition der Marsrover
Die Landung und die anschließenden Erkundungsfahrten der Marsrover Spirit und Opportunity markierten im Januar 2004 einen Höhepunkt in der Erforschung des Roten Planeten. Die NASA rechnete damit, dass die Solarpaneele der Roboter-Fahrzeuge spätestens mit Anbruch des Marswinters zu wenig Energie für den Betrieb liefern würden - den Forschern blieben somit nur etwa 90 Tage für ihre Mission. Stattdessen jedoch brachte es Spirit auf ganze sechs Jahre, während Opportunity bis heute aktiv ist. Dabei stand die Mission anfangs unter keinem guten Stern, folgte sie doch auf eine Reihe dramatischer Fehlschläge...
